Our orthodontic philosophy at Dana Street Dental is to create healthy and beautiful faces.

For us it’s not just about straight teeth. We focus on our patient’s facial profile, lip support, airway, jaw joint as well as any underlying factors that could influence jaw development and teeth position (for example: lip/tongue tie, thumb sucking, mouth breathing and tongue thrust.

In a growing child, our initial focus is on dentofacial orthopaedics: improving their airway and promoting proper facial development. This may involve fitting an expansion plate to improve the size of the jaws. Rather than extracting healthy adult teeth later on, we prefer to grow the jaws to their genetic potential to allow the teeth to fit in. As the palate expands, so will the nasal and sinus passage – enabling the patient to breathe easier through their nose.

As functional orthodontics works best when the patient is still growing. We recommend the first orthodontic consult to be around the age of 7.

Once the patient has all their adult teeth, braces are placed to straighten their teeth. We use the revolutionary self-ligating braces by the Damon System.  Traditional braces are tied in with elastics, which cause significant friction – making treatment slower and less comfortable. Damon braces have a slide mechanism that holds the wire, allowing teeth to move freely and comfortably. With the Damon system, we are able to design fuller smiles customised to every patient’s facial profile.

If the look of traditional braces isn’t for you, straighter teeth could also be achieved with clear aligner systems such as Invisalign. These are a series of invisible acrylic trays that gradually straighten teeth as braces do. The aligners are removable, allowing easier access for brushing and flossing.

For minor teeth alignment issues, our dentists are also providers of the Inman Aligner and the Invisalign Go System.

As not all treatment options suits everyone, please contact us via (03) 53316117 to book in an initial consultation. At this visit, we will discuss all the available treatment options and provide an estimation of cost and length of time involved. We look forward to hearing from you!
