Our Sedation Options

A significant percentage of the population suffers from a degree of dental-related anxiety. So, if receiving dental treatment makes you feel nervous or uncomfortable, you’re not alone. At Dana Street Dental, it’s important to us that you can receive the dental care you need. For nervous patients, or those having multiple treatments in one appointment, our Ballarat dental practice offers a range of sedation options to make it easier for you.

All our dentists are trained to provide nitrous sedation or ‘happy gas’. And, more recently, we also offer in house intravenous or ‘sleep dentistry’ through the experts at Dental Sedation Victoria.

Don’t let your fear of the dentist get in the way of having healthy teeth and gums. For reputable sleep dentistry Ballarat, our dental practice has you covered.

Happy Gas

Dental Nitrous Oxide, also known as “laughing gas” or “happy gas”, is a simple sedation method your dentist can administer to you during treatment. Happy gas is inhaled and takes around five minutes to help you feel very comfortable and relaxed. It is a safe, effective and pain-free sedation method. It allows your dentist to treat you effectively while you relax. Happy gas is a great sedation option for children who need to undergo dental procedures.

After being sedated with happy gas, it may take you a few hours to feel back to your normal self again after your treatment. Children tend to shake it off a little easier than adults.

IV Sedation (Twilight Sedation)

IV sedation dentistry goes by a few names. These include twilight dentistry, conscious sedation and sleep dentistry. We are happy to be able to offer patients treatment under IV sedation from the comfort of our Ballarat dental rooms.

IV sedation involves our qualified and accredited dental sedationist administering a sedative to you intravenously during treatment. This form of sedation takes effect almost instantly. Although you remain “awake” under IV sedation, you’ll be in a dream-like state. What’s more, you’ll have little to no recollection of the experience once it wears off.

When receiving dental care under twilight sedation, you need to plan ahead. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment and be with you at home during the afternoon/evening post-treatment.

General Anaesthesia

Depending on the nature of your dental treatments, we are also able to treat you under general anaesthesia in a hospital. Having dental treatment in hospital under general anaesthetic is common for those requiring surgical removal of their wisdom teeth.

Unlike IV sedation which is a form of conscious sedation, general anaesthesia is a form of unconscious sedation. Under general anaesthesia, you will be asleep for the duration of your treatment. Recovering from this form of sedation takes a little longer. And like having twilight dentistry, it involves some planning ahead. You will need someone to drive you to and from the hospital and be with you at home during the afternoon/evening post-treatment.

General anaesthesia can only be administered by an anaesthetist.

Nervous Patients

Our gentle dentists have a lot of experience in treating nervous patients. So much so, that many nervous patients end up opting out of sedation after visiting our Ballarat dental rooms. We work together to take the very best care of you and make sure you feel as comfortable as possible at all times.

If you experience one or more of the following things, speak to us about sleep dentistry:

To undergo treatment under IV sedation, you need to be in good general health. Our dentists go through a thorough consultation with you to ensure your eligibility for sleep dentistry. This includes your dentist reviewing your medical and oral health history, any allergies you have or medications you take. If you suffer from a medical condition like high blood pressure, you may need a doctor’s clearance to undergo dental treatment under sedation.
