What Is a Veneer?
A dental veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite resin that gets bonded to the front surface of your tooth, enhancing its appearance.
At Dana Street Dental, we offer both porcelain and composite resin veneers. Whilst they are both effective at creating smile transformations, they have a different process and set of pros and cons. A consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic dentists will help you determine if dental veneers are right for you, and if so, which type.
The Benefits of Dental Veneers
The Process for Getting Dental Veneers
The first step in getting veneers is a consultation with one of our dentists to ensure that veneers are a suitable treatment option for you. The great news is, most people are good candidates for this life-changing cosmetic dental treatment.
At our Ballarat dental practice, our dentists never rush. They take the time to get to know you and understand the concerns you have with your smile. They will also conduct a thorough assessment of your oral health before recommending the best treatment plan for you.
Once you’re confident with your decision to go ahead with dental veneers, the next steps can begin. For both composite and porcelain veneers, professional teeth whitening may be necessary before the veneer process begins.
Getting porcelain and composite veneers looks a little different.
Below you’ll find what to expect when getting either type of veneers.
So now that you have decided on porcelain veneers, it’s time to get started with creating your new smile. With the help of Digital Smile Design, you can co-author your new smile with your dentist, making any final adjustments before you’re ready to lock in your new perfected look. You can even try on your new smile prior to commencing treatment.
At Dana Street Dental, our philosophy when it comes to cosmetic dentistry is to achieve your desired smile all whilst doing the least dentistry possible. And whilst there is some preparation of the tooth required for porcelain veneers, this is always kept at a minimum and without causing harm to the tooth.
When your veneers are made, your dentist will do a final fitting to ensure the perfect fit before bonding them into place. Once your veneers are cemented to the front surface of your teeth, your dentist will polish them for a natural-looking finish.
And just like that, your new and improved smile is ready for you to show to the world.
If you and your dentist decide that composite resin veneers are the best option for you, the exciting part of the process can begin. Getting composite veneers is different to porcelain veneers. Where porcelain veneers may take a few appointments to complete, composite veneers are often a same-day treatment, depending on the case at hand.
For composite dental veneers, your teeth will need minimal and sometimes no preparation other than to be cleaned for the resin to bond to your tooth surface well. The next step will see your dentist applying the composite resin of the appropriate shade directly to the front surface of your teeth being treated. Your dentist will appropriately shape the resin on each tooth before setting it, using a special light.
Like porcelain veneers, the process is finished off with polishing for the most natural-looking result.
Dental Veneers Aftercare
Whether you have had porcelain or composite veneers, they’re an investment you want to protect. Porcelain veneers have a longer lifespan than composite veneers, but you can extend the life of both with proper care.
Taking good care of your new veneers is no different from caring for your natural teeth. Twice daily brushing and daily flossing will help preserve your veneers as well as keep your oral health in check. Maintaining regular dental visits is essential for your oral health, but also your dental veneers. It allows your dentist to pick up on any potential issues early on in the piece before major treatment or veneer replacement is required.
Below are a few extra things you can do to ensure your veneers serve you well:
