What Is a Veneer?
A dental veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite resin that gets bonded to the front surface of your tooth, enhancing its appearance.
At Dana Street Dental, we offer both porcelain and composite resin veneers. Whilst they are both effective at creating smile transformations, they have a different process and set of pros and cons. A consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic dentists will help you determine if dental veneers are right for you, and if so, which type.
The Benefits of Dental Veneers
- 100% custom made to suit your smile goals
- Incredibly natural-looking (especially porcelain)
- Durable and long-lasting
- Resistant to staining
- Minimal discomfort
- Minimal downtime needed for recovery
- Achieve your dream smile quickly
The Process for Getting Dental Veneers
The first step in getting veneers is a consultation with one of our dentists to ensure that veneers are a suitable treatment option for you. The great news is, most people are good candidates for this life-changing cosmetic dental treatment.
At our Ballarat dental practice, our dentists never rush. They take the time to get to know you and understand the concerns you have with your smile. They will also conduct a thorough assessment of your oral health before recommending the best treatment plan for you.
Once you’re confident with your decision to go ahead with dental veneers, the next steps can begin. For both composite and porcelain veneers, professional teeth whitening may be necessary before the veneer process begins.
Getting porcelain and composite veneers looks a little different.
Below you’ll find what to expect when getting either type of veneers.
Porcelain Veneers
If you and your dentist decide that porcelain veneers are the right option for you, this is where your smile transformation truly begins.
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-crafted ceramic shells designed to enhance the shape, colour and overall balance of your smile. While composite veneers can often be completed in a single visit, porcelain veneers are typically completed over multiple appointments, allowing for a highly detailed and personalised approach to your treatment.
One of the advantages of porcelain veneers is their strength, longevity and ability to replicate the natural translucency and light reflection of real enamel. Some gentle tooth preparation is required to ensure an ideal fit and seamless finish. However, at Dana Street Dental, our philosophy is always to achieve your desired results while doing the least dentistry possible.
We use Digital Smile Design technology to carefully plan your new smile. This allows you to co-create your outcome alongside your dentist, reviewing the proposed changes and refining the details before treatment begins. In many cases, you can even preview or “try on” your new smile, giving you clarity and confidence before proceeding.
Once your custom veneers are meticulously crafted by our ceramist, your dentist will complete a detailed fitting appointment to assess shape, shade, symmetry and bite harmony. When everything is precisely balanced, the veneers are carefully bonded to the front surface of your teeth.
Porcelain veneers are a durable, refined and highly aesthetic way to transform your smile — delivering long-term beauty while maintaining the integrity of your natural teeth.
Composite Veneers
If you and your dentist decide that composite resin veneers are the right option for you, this is where your smile transformation begins.
Composite veneers differ slightly from porcelain veneers. While porcelain veneers often require multiple appointments, composite veneers can frequently be completed in just one visit, depending on your individual case.
One of the advantages of composite veneers is that they usually require minimal — and sometimes no — tooth preparation. In most cases, your teeth simply need to be thoroughly cleaned to ensure the resin bonds securely to the surface.
Your dentist will then carefully apply a tooth-coloured composite resin directly to the front of the teeth being treated. At Dana Street Dental, we use translucent enamel layering techniques, allowing us to build the composite in fine layers that mimic the natural depth and light reflection of real enamel. This ensures the teeth look amazing — and most importantly beautifully natural.
The material is skilfully sculpted and shaped before being hardened with a special curing light. The process is then finished with meticulous polishing to create a smooth, lifelike result that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
Composite veneers are a conservative, efficient and highly aesthetic way to refresh your smile — all while preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.
Dental Veneers Aftercare
Whether you have had porcelain or composite veneers, they’re an investment you want to protect. Porcelain veneers have a longer lifespan than composite veneers, but you can extend the life of both with proper care.
Taking good care of your new veneers is no different from caring for your natural teeth. Twice daily brushing and daily flossing will help preserve your veneers as well as keep your oral health in check. Maintaining regular dental visits is essential for your oral health, but also your dental veneers. It allows your dentist to pick up on any potential issues early on in the piece before major treatment or veneer replacement is required.
Below are a few extra things you can do to ensure your veneers serve you well:
- If you grind your teeth, speak to your dentist about a bite splint to protect your teeth (and your veneers). Whilst veneers are made strong, they are not made to withstand the ongoing force of teeth grinding.
- Be careful when eating hard foods, or chewing hard things (nails, tips of pens or pencils, ice)
- If involved in contact sports or activities, it's important to protect your teeth and your investment in your veneers by wearing a custom-made mouthguard.
