If you or your child have recently started orthodontic treatment, keeping braces or aligners in top condition is essential for achieving the best results. At Dana Street Dental, we’ve put together these simple, practical tips to help you maintain your family’s orthodontic health with ease.

Caring for Braces: What You Need to Know

1. Brush and Floss Regularly

Braces create extra spaces where food and plaque can get trapped. To keep teeth and gums healthy:

  • Brush at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel.
  • Floss daily with orthodontic floss threaders or a water flosser for easy cleaning between brackets.

2. Avoid Certain Foods

Hard, sticky, or chewy foods can damage braces. Avoid:

  • Popcorn, nuts, and ice (can break brackets or wires)
  • Chewy lollies, caramel, and gum (can get stuck in braces)
  • Crunchy foods like raw carrots and apples (cut them into small pieces instead)

3. Protect Your Braces During Sports

If you or your child plays contact sports, ensure an orthodontic mouthguard is worn to prevent damage to braces and teeth.

Caring for Clear Aligners: Keep Them Crystal Clear

1. Clean Your Aligners Properly

  • Rinse them with lukewarm water every time you remove them.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to gently clean aligners with clear, mild soap (avoid toothpaste, as it can be abrasive).
  • Soak them in an aligner cleaner or a mixture of water and white vinegar for a deep clean.

2. Wear Them as Directed

For the best results, wear aligners for 20-22 hours per day. Remove them only when eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing your teeth.

3. Keep Aligners Safe

  • Store aligners in their protective case when not in use.
  • Keep them away from pets (dogs love to chew on them!).
  • Avoid leaving them in hot environments, as heat can warp the plastic.

Why Proper Care Matters

Taking good care of braces or aligners ensures a smoother, faster, and more effective treatment. It also helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and unnecessary discomfort. By following these simple steps, you can help your child—or yourself—achieve a confident, healthy smile.
